Y Street welcomes back Fresh Spot!
My name is Tresure Gary and I attend Tallwood High School. I’ve been a member of Y Street for 2 years, with this year being my first on the Y Street Leadership Team. Fresh Spot is one of the few campaigns I’ve taken part in. Fresh Spot focuses on making healthy food more accessible and available to all Virginians. Through community events, the Fresh Spot campaign plans to make access to healthy food easier and faster, and overall promote a healthier Virginia.
The Fresh Spot event I attended took place in May 18-21, 2017 at the Chesapeake Jubilee, a community fair in downtown Chesapeake. We collected surveys that assessed attendee’s access to fresh produce and their shopping habits. The visitors who took the time to fill out a survey received a piece of fruit and a Fresh Spot tote bag in exchange for their support of the campaign. There was also a small corn hole game for younger kids to play while we educated their parents on the plans of Fresh Spot.
Events like these are essential to the success of the Fresh Spot campaign. These events help get the word out and gather information. I love Fresh Spot because it will give others the access to fresh food that I have and, admittedly, sometimes take for granted. Knowing that some Virginians live in food deserts and don’t even have the opportunity to choose to have healthy eating habits is just not fair. Fresh Spot is an amazing campaign and I can’t wait to see the positive impact we could have!
