Speaking Out: NMACT Day at the Capitol

I am Sergio Morales, a member of Evolvement. I am a sophomore Los Lunas High School. With Evolvement, I work to make schools truly tobacco-free through the 24/7 campaign.

At the NMACT Day at the Capitol in Santa Fe, we spoke during a press conference about the importance of a tobacco-free New Mexico. Many of the people were trying to stop adult smoking. Hunter and I spoke on the importance of programs like Evolvement that work on campaigns such as 24/7 that include both youth and adults, since youth who start early are likely to continue using tobacco as adults.

As a youth myself, I believe that events like the NMACT Day at the Capitol are important because they don’t only raise awareness about what people want, but also help to tell those in positions of influence to make decisions based on the health and well-being of everyone. Evolvement not only does this, but teaches the youth that acting is just as important as informing. This was an important opportunity since I learned how the legislative session works and it also showed me even just one voice can make a difference.
